Our community nurses are a branch of the nursing profession offering healthcare services to housebound patients who cannot attend the surgery but need nursing care and for whom admission to hospital is not necessary or desirable. This help may include:

  • Visits from members of the nursing team to give skilled care or specialist treatments.
  • Information about and/or referrals to other community services.
  • Support if you are caring for another family member.
  • Teaching you or a relative ways in which you can lead as independent a life as possible.
  • Confidential advice about nursing matters.
  • 24 hour access to the nursing service

The community nurses may be contacted on their direct line, 0300 323 0022, which also has an answerphone.

A message from the community midwives

Congratulations on your pregnancy - Next step

We now ask that all women complete the maternity online self-referral forms.

Once you've completed your self-referral a midwife will be in touch to arrange your first appointment.

Please visit visit Screening tests in pregnancy to access important information which you will need to read before your 1st appointment (this information may also be available in a screening booklet inside your folder)

Please bring your booking folder and all the documents with you to your 1st appointment

If you do not have access to the internet then you can refer yourself to your preferred hospital by:

  • Calling RUH Maternity on 01225 826454. Choose option 2 and select the maternity unit closest to you.
  • For Musgrove or Yeovil you can call the Somerset designated booking line on 01823 343321. This is an answerphone service, please leave your full name and contact telephone number and one of the midwives will call you back. Please be aware it may take up to 3 days for someone to contact you.

This is a very exciting time and there is no doubt that you will have many questions that need to be answered now that your pregnancy has been confirmed. Visit your app store to download the Handi maternity app. This has a lot of information you need to know, alternatively search NHS choices and see our FAQ’s tab on the self-referral page.

We look forward to welcoming you and caring for you throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period….. your community midwifery team
